Many memorable moments come to mind from being
associated with the Kiwanis Club of Galt, but there
are two that really epitomize the spirit of the club.
The first is the true friendships you
create while helping others. Not fair weather friends, but the kind of friends you can count on when you need help yourself. I knew this
before I found out that I had cancer, but the members really showed they are friends
for the long haul. Even though I am no longer a member (I no longer live
in Galt), the news of my diagnosis brought phone calls and visits to encourage
me during treatments and the club even chipped in for a video rental membership
to help pass the time during recovery.
My other memorable moment came as I was questioning
the validity of the club. Sure we raised money for worthwhile causes, but until you
see how your efforts affect the those you are helping your actions don't
feel real. That all changed when I got involved with my first Christmas adopt-a-family.
From a gift certificate for food for dinner, to
a tree with decorations and lights, and gifts to go under the tree, the program provides everything
for Christmas to a family who would have to skip Christmas otherwise.
But the real joy comes when you make the delivery to the family.
The kids look at you like you're Santa. The family's excitement and appreciation
make all your efforts worthwhile and you can only imagine the feelings that
this and the other programs the club supports brings to those they help....
